The refugee card is an identification document issued to a foreigner with the right to asylum. Its validity is two years. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) issues ID cards to refugees in Cameroon. However, these cards cannot be used to gain employment or access basic services in the country.
These cards are the only proof of ID that refugees and asylum seekers have and are recognized by the Cameroonian government as one of the prerequisites to obtain a refugee card from the state of Cameroon.
Documents Required to Apply for a Refugee Card in Cameroon
The issuance of the refugee card is subject to the presentation of the following documents by the foreigner:
- A refugee certificate issued by the Minister of External Relations.
- The identification card, issued by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR);
Documents Required to Renew a Refugee Card
The renewal of the refugee card in Cameroon is subject to the presentation of the following documents:
- The old refugee certificate, at least one month before the expiry of its validity;
- The old refugee card, at least one month before the expiry of its validity is also required.
How Much Does a Refugee Card Cost in Cameroon?
The issuance and renewal of the Refugee Card are exempt from stamp duty. Hence, It is absolutely free.
