As I write this, I placed myself on a one-month challenge to learn web design and programming, develop this website, and write numerous articles while coping with work and other daily routines. The worst is that I caught a cold a few days back and relied on cold meds and caffeine to avoid Sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Matthew_Walker_(scientist)\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Matthew_Walker_(scientist)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">neuroscientist Matthew Walker<\/a>, I&#8217;m severely damaging my health\u2014and life\u2014by not sleeping enough. It could even extend to affect the safety and education of our children. It&#8217;s a silent sleep-loss epidemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s fast becoming one of the most significant challenges we face in the 21st century,&#8221; Walker, an expert in Sleep at UC Berkeley and author of the best-selling book, told a rapt TED audience on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-sleep-deprivation-hurts\">How Sleep deprivation Hurts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Walker described how Sleep deprivation hurts people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It makes you dumber, more forgetful, unable to learn new things,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Makes you more vulnerable to dementia,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More likely to die of a heart attack,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It makes you less able to fight sickness with a robust immune system and more likely to get cancer, making your body hurt more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of Sleep distorts your gene.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It increases your risk of death generally.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It disrupts the creation of sex hormones like estrogen and testosterone, leading to premature aging. Apparently, men who only sleep five hours a night have markedly smaller testicles than men who sleep for more than seven hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>He also stated, &#8220;Sleep loss will leak down into every nook and cranny of your physiology,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Sleep, unfortunately, is not an optional lifestyle luxury. Sleep is a non-negotiable biological necessity. It is your life-support system.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of all the TED Talks I&#8217;ve followed this week, this one hit my conscience severely. I knew how unfair it was to overwork my hippocampus, my brain&#8217;s &#8220;information inbox,&#8221; as Walker terms it. I struggled to get the message until the end. But from that moment, I knew I wasn&#8217;t alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-ways-to-avoid-sleep-deprivation-and-stay-healthy\">4 Ways to Avoid Sleep Deprivation and Stay Healthy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone is obsessed with Sleep. And we know we aren&#8217;t getting enough\u2014hence the growing demand for sleeping pills, the emergence of sleep-tracking devices ( I currently use the Mi Band 4, a fitness and sleep tracker), Alexa integrations to put you to sleep, and sleep apps which tell you when you should rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the above talk, people wanted to know what to eat, how to dream, and when to sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These were his four proposed answers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don&#8217;t drink caffeine or alcohol. Go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning (even on the weekends).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sleep in a cold room. If you are lying awake in bed, listening to the litany of worries your brain is churning through, get up, go into a different place, and do an activity, then return to bed when you&#8217;re ready.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meditate to calm your nervous system and your mind. Don&#8217;t default to sleeping pills, which are &#8220;blunt instruments that do not produce naturalistic sleep,&#8221; he said.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Afterward, he went on to say he may be able to offer an affordable and portable brain-stimulating device that would use transcranial direct-current stimulation to help people have a deeper sleep. Walker has just started a company called Stim Science to develop the machine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"sleep-makes-us-even-better-at-everything-we-do\">Sleep makes us even better at everything we do<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The disruption of deep sleep is contributing to cognitive decline,&#8221; Walker says: in aging patients at risk of or already experiencing dementia, and even in healthy people. &#8220;You need to sleep after learning, to essentially hit the save button on those new memories so you don&#8217;t forget. But recently, we&#8217;ve discovered that you also need to Sleep before learning, almost like a dry sponge to suck up new information. Without Sleep, the brain becomes essentially waterlogged.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This concept sounds right. I definitely accepted I was going to retain this advice. Five days ago, I had barely slept for 3 nights as I was doing significant design changes to my website. When I got up early to write an article, I could hardly think of anything meaningful and felt so dumb. I was not as sharp at work, and my interactions with those around me were a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the past couple of days, I have planned my work better and accepted that Sleep must be a priority for me. This is Wednesday, and I felt I should turn on my computer and type these words.
